Pugs are great dogs, but not all dogs are right for each individual person.

You need to research various breeds before choosing the right dog for you. Start by reading about the different dogs on the AKC's web site www.akc.org

But here's a little about pugs.

The good: Pugs are extremely loyal to their owners. They are very loving little lap dogs who want nothing more than to entertain and make you happy. They are very attuned to their owners feelings.

The bad: Pugs do shed heavily. Their eyes are prominent and need care as they can easily get dirt caught in them that cause infections. They can't breathe in extreme heat and are very much indoor dogs. They need light exercise, so no major hiking trips for this little guy unless he's in a doggy pack.

Pugs are really good pets. They're happy in small quarters, like apartments, good with kids and strangers, and hearty and strong enough to be a lot of fun. The downsides are they snore and shed. Their eyes bulge out a little and need a little care daily, but nothing to worry about. Like almost all pure bred dogs, there are lists of health problems to which their breed is susceptible, but you can keep a good eye on all of them with your vet's help.

I have a Boston Terrier - their health concerns list is similar to a pug's but they have more to worry about. My BT has a heart murmur and bad knees (overbreeding) but you would never know it from the energy level and the delight she gives me every day. I get her regular checkups as you would with any dog, and so far, so good. She's also a great pet because she's very eager to please but also completely nuts and a lot of fun to watch at play. She hardly ever sheds, but pugs do shed a bit. BTs are also hearty and energetic dogs but not quite as muscular as pugs.

Depending on your lifestyle, I would consider these breeds for yourself. On the other hand, if you're considering a dog and are not entirely focused on specific breeds, go to your local shelters (find them at www.petfinders.com ) and look over the dogs available for adoption. My other dog is a Wedunno (we don't know) and he's worked out wonderfully. We tell people he's a North American Cheesehound, though he's probably a mix of corgi and beagle or something. Any shelter worth its salt should be able to give you a ten day to two week tryout period with any dog you consider adopting, so if there are big concerns, you can bring the dog back and try again. Besides, rescuing dogs in need is a way to be a hero - buying a dog from a breeder is just commerce. Think about it.

Pugs are excellent pets. Very affectionate and have adorable personalities. They also are relatively easy to housetrain, and are big enough to not be annoying, but not big enough to hurt someone...(can you imagine them biting someone with that tiny mouth?) I have a black pug and have found that they tend to not shed as much as the tan or fawn pugs. Very important, considering I'm allergic. Make sure you get an AKC registered pug, because that means it is 100% true to the breed (both it's parents, grandparents, etc were pugs). The "designer" breeds, (Puggles, Pugzu, etc) tend to have more health problems and cannot be show dogs. Good luck to you!

i have a fawn and black pug, he is 5 yrs. Personality wise they are great dogs loving and very playful. They do make great pets. However keep in mind that the breed is prone to alot of health problems, its a long list and you are almost guarinteed to end up with a few of them. Be advised that you will need to be prepared to deal with these if they do arise and make sure you are finacially able to do so. SKin and food allergies, Demodectic Mange or Localized Demodectic Mange ,Elongated Soft Palate

A problem that is frequently seen in pugs is called, elongated soft palate- the soft palate is a flap of mucousal tissue which closes off the animal's airway during swallowing to prevent foods and liquids from going into their lungs., Pug dog Encephalitis, can affect from 6mths to 7yr olds , Stenotic nares is where soft nasal tissue collapses making it difficult to breath through nose. entropian surgery on eyes due to large folds or eye lids rolling back into eye itself, epilepsy, yeast in ears and in folds on face from moisture, this is just some of the potiential problems. my pug has had the entropian surgery and wrinkle reduction to save his eyesight, and help his breathing-$1,500. He has food allergys and can not eat chkn, only lamb and rice foods. He has summer time allergys and has to take meds to help with hives and itching $55mth. i have to clean his folds and ears to prevent yeast infections $12 mth. Plus yearly medical shots and foods ect...

Pugs are very smart and love to entertain you. If they know they have your attention, they will show off. I used to have one and she hardly ever barked. I was even able to litter train her. Good luck.

Do you have a huge back and/or front yard? Do you have a barn? Do you have a pig pin? And do you have a lot of pig food and I don't mean left overs, they also need real food like you just pig food.
