They try to encourage responsible breeding & ownership & to discourage indiscrimate breeding. They educate members & try to ensure that breeding stock has all the necessary health tests before being bred from.

While breed societies influence somewhat, they mainly make the breed standards, sadly enough it's shows and fads that really influence a breed. What a judge prefers is usually what ends up influencing breeders to breed for, all about $$.

The breed society usually defines a 'breed standard' for the requirements of build/temperament etc that should be typical of a good example of that particular breed. Breeders then try to breed within that breed standard as the animals produced are then worth more as breeding animals & show animals. The breed standard also affects how a show animal is judged as it should be 'true to type'.

Breed societies usually set the breed standard, setting out what breeders need to be aiming for in their animals. This is also how the animals are judged at shows.

They are also a good way for breeders to get in contact with each other, and a prospective buyer might speak to a breed society to find a breeder in their area.

They encourage people to only breed to the breed standard.

This has benefits but also downsides-for example every year in the UK loads of white boxer puppies which could be great pets are put down at birth cos they aren't allowable by the breed standard.

generally they help to keep the breeds pure and 'well bred'.
This means keeping the breed free from genetic defects and diseases.

they also help to breed good traits. for example, you may have two poodles - both black, one with sparser more coarse hair, the other with silkier thicker hair like a well bred poodle is supposed to have - you would breed the good one, not the bad one so that the bad traits dont pass on.

most GOOD breeders are certified and belong to worldwide known societies and only breed dogs frm certain lines, or parentage for these reasons.
