Sadly that the racial equality hoo ha has actually made it a bad word!!!
I simply cannot see the logic in that! There are bad connotations to white such as - to whitewash something i.e. to cover it up. No one suggested that should be stopped from use.
The PC brigade took the phrase to 'blackball someone' and said it was bad cause it used black. But it only referred to the colours of black and white balls and not race! In doing this and with other quite innocent words they have actually made the word 'black' mean something terrible and nasty and unusable!!
Black should have been stressed as a good word.
I have many Friends all over the world and find it funny that in the vast majority of countries it is not a problem and that many people of non white colour prefer to be called black. So it appears to be a PC problem in white Western countries.
Whilst segregation and prejudice has been fought down and integration and acceptance of all people regardless of race, sex or creed has become the accepted norm I think the continued isolation of the word 'black' is doing a world of harm.
