i just wonder how much the national sides manager can influence the game(other than a few tactics & line-up etc), surely a bad performance is down to the players

i agree with you on that, about the players, but if they are set up in a way buy the manager they may not enjoy playin in, then the team work is going to go down hill. but if the team play the way they want to play, n not the managers you may see results, also what happens off the pitch is a mystery, players may not like their managers hense the disapointing results.
also the managers experience too influences the match, take England for example, the manager used to be the old managers helper. he is only doing what the old manager used to do, because its the only way he knows how to play the team!

Of course it's down to the players at the moment. Generally that is the case. England wonder why they do so poorly when they have the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney. But let's face it, last night Rooney and Lampard had shockers. McLaren took off Hargreaves and Johnson (who played well). I have no idea why - maybe they are stars and McLaren wouldn't dare take them off. How can you blame managers for 30-40 years of bad performances? Maybe the english should just stop thinking they should be winning every single competition and start getting real.

It´s a mixture of many things.

It has been common for players to play great for their club but crap for their country. This in itself could be due to the players surrounding him. Sir Alf Ramsey said that the trick is to find the best team and not the best players. And he´s right.

There´s no point of having a team full of stars if they can´t play together, this one area where McClaren is at fault, he puts Lampard and Gerrard on the pitch at the same time and it doesn´t work.

So where would you place blame. it´s a hard call really, but if the players showed more passion and the manager more sense, then we might perform better than we are.

I think in international matches the manager has to be take the blame in the case of McClaren he has not managed a club side very well so how can he be expected to manage England to glory the Manager has to instill pride and passion and if he has lost the dressing room then that is niegh on impossible to do. i also think a lot of the blame has to lie with the big wigs at the FA all they had to do was to wait for the right man to come along but because of there hast to ensure we had a mananger in place they chose a sub standard man who has had no success anywhere as a manager

he should go now and at least keep a small amount of dignity, how can someone do so bad with the set of world class players we have? im tellin ya...we should have never let sven go, i no he was a bit kooky and had personal issie but so what, dont we all? how the hell did he get the job? i reeckon its easier to win, its like he is trying and testing way too much. if he waits to get the sack, itl be too late and we wont qualify, can you imagine the embarresment if we dont qualify for the euro 2008? we'll be a laughing stock, Mclaren out, Big Sam IN!!

I agree with you too. The manager picks the squad. He's at fault for putting a crap side out. I'm still wondering why Darren Bent isn't with the team. He's healthy now. He's the best forward England has. There's no reason a healthy Darren Bent shouldn't be on the team. In a year or two, I think Matt Derbyshire should be there. Bent and Derbyshire should be the forwards of the future. Bent should be there now.

The manager is at fault - the players can only play where they are asked to. Look at Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard - all great players for their clubs but absolutely rubbish at the moment for England. Why ? A ship will wash on the rocks if it has no-one to steer it.

Look at Greece in the last Euros - hopeless players but the coach had real good ideas and drove them to glory.
