First, check to see if the distributor can be turned by hand.
That could have changed the timing if it slipped.
Second, remove the distributor cap and re-check the points gap. (I don't know what it should be. .0014" maybe?)
Disconnect the vacuum advance to the distributor and see if that helps. if it does, check the timing.
Hows your air filter?

I have had a number of these wonderful little cars here in the UK and the most likely cause is that the fuel to air mixture is wrong. You could try cleaning out the float chamber on the carb as well, especially if the car has been sitting around for a while.

Runs wonderful at velocity yet would not run wonderful whilst idling. ok. that is not any longer a situation with the gas filter out or pump. If that became the situation, it would worsen going swifter, not extra suitable. comparable with undesirable gas. in case you had an older automobile, i might say the spark advance is tousled (Timing situation.) With a 2001, i might suspect the pc is screwing up or a sensor is unfastened. With the plug in diagnostics, it is going to no longer be difficult for a stable storage to discover the situation. i would not forget approximately approximately it because of the fact the situation might worsen or reason different injury and value extra.

The vacuum advance on the timing is bad, the timing is off, the accelerator pump in the carb is bad, you have a vacuum leak, the engine is worn, or a hundred other things.

The backfiring makes me think your ignition timing may be off, also check carb mounting ,intake manifold nuts for looseness and all the vacuum lines, etc. for vacuum leaks.
