Which earthquake? The San Andreas fault has earthquakes all the time! Most of them are very small, but the 2 biggest, most famous earthquakes along that fault line in the SF area were in 1906 and 1989 (right in the middle of the World Series). Are those the ones you're referring too?

The big one of which you're probably thinking was at 5:18am on April 18, 1906. In a population of 410,000, somewhere between 225,000 and 300,000 were left homeless from the massive quake. As damaging as the initial earthquakes and aftershocks were, it is estimated that some 90% of the damage was caused by the subsequent fires that ravaged the city, although that figure may be exaggerated. Natural gas line ruptures, arson, and refugee campfires were blamed for the fires.
