Try this, you may be running into Adware, Spyware, Virus problems as well as space issues.
CLEANUP STUFF
Open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Delete Cookies, Delete Files (check offline also).
Start, Run, type %temp%, Delete all files and folders. Some may say that they are in use, skip them until the next time you do this procedure.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
Now run something like Spybot and Adaware, and virus scan.
This should get rid of the majority of problems.
Now try Error Checking (scandisk), and then Defrag
Good Luck

are you sure it's crashing, or just really slow?
windows needs a minimum amount of free space to defrag. i think it's around 15% (maybe more). if you don't have this much, that could be an issue.
also, start the defrag and go away for a LONG time; say 2 hours, then re-check progress; if you have scads of frag'd files, windows may be just taking a heck of a long time to organize them.
also, on your 'c' drive, properties; make sure you are checked on the 'compress contents to save space' this will have great affects on future defrag's, and will itself take quite a while if you've never checked it before.
at worst, it may be a drive failure; a fine utility to fix it (if the data is very valuable) is "grc spinrite" well worth the 80.00 (u.s.) for valuable data, and works very well.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THE STORY THAT WHATEVER YOU STORE ON THE COMPUTER IT STAYS THERE FOREVER EVEN IF YOU FORMAT!!!
REALISTICALLY THIS MEANS THAT EVERY TIME YOU DEFRAGMENT YOU ARE EVEN DEFRAGMENTING FILES FROM LONG AGO FROM PREVIOUS FORMATTING!!!
NEXT TIME YOU TRY TO FORMAT AND INSTALL YOUR COMPUTER YOU HAVE TO FORMAT IT AT LEAST 8 TIMES BEFORE YOU INSTALL WINDOWS BACK IN IT THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS DELETED AND FORMATTED AND FULLY WIPED OUT OF THE HARD DRIVE!!!
SO THAT NEXT TIME YOU DEFRAGMENT IT WILL WORK ALOT FASTER AND AND BETTER!!!

Get all your data off and start from scratch. Format it.
You could try to clone it all to a new HDD with True Image (unless your drive is too far gone).
