Hi Lisa,
Depends on what you want to write about. If its a children picture book, or a romance research the topics you want to write about. Get some knowledge on line such as the Writers Market, and Writers Digest Magazine which are more accurate than the ezines being listed on Answers. I find that there tend to be alot of personal negativity and writers bashin on these sites than anywhere else. If you wish to contact a few of them for info and such. I can email you my personal list of publishers looking for new writers.

Can't advocate a booklet on writing a well booklet as I do Inspirational writing myself. Can advocate any Artist or Writer making an investment in a duplicate of the Writers and Artists Year Book, which can also be bought in such a lot booklet retail outlets adding W H Smiths. It is renewed every 12 months - so try to get the trendy replica. The Writers and Artists Year Book is stuffed with steerage and is beneficial for any Artist or Author. It even lists unique publishers and what they're notably eager about publishing, ie youngsters novels, poetry and so on. Good Luck

Don't write a book to sell it. Write a book because you have a passion for writing. Write because you have an idea in your head that you just have to get onto paper. Write because it is a part of who you are.
Read as much as you can, particularly in the genre(s) that you hope to write in. This can help you learn how those types of books typically work, and what you like and dislike in them. I also suggest taking a look at a few books about the craft of writing. Here are some of my favorites:
1) "Writing Down The Bones" by Natalie Goldberg
2) "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott
3) "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser
4) "How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy" by Orson Scott Card (if those are your genres, of course)
5) "On Writing" by Stephen King
6) "No Plot? No Problem!" by Chris Baty
Try and write every day, even if it's not on that particular project. Make it a part of your routine. Like everything else, practice makes perfect!
As far as publication goes, marketing a completed book is a long process, filled with many rejections. You would need to search for an agent who can get your book into the hands of people at publishing houses.
I don't mean to sound discouraging, and I hope you do write your book! But write it for yourself, not for anyone else.
