It's actually Eriochrome Black T and is an azo dye.

When not complexed to metal ions, it is blue. When it is, it is red. Since metals preferentially bind to EDTA vs. Eriochrome Black T, when enough EDTA has been added to grab all of the metal ions, the color of free Eriochrome Black T is seen.
