don't use anything that is too dusty, the dust irritates their lungs and can make them sick. i used to use that green pine bedding for my mini hamster, and then i got him some bigger chips of wood to chew on. they also like it if you mix a little bit of hay in with the chips. the hay is easy for them to use to build nests.

We had pet mice and a lady at the pet store said those wood shavings should only be used with pets as small as a guinea pig or rabbit. She spoke of the resperatory issues. If you are looking for pet bedding, I highly suggest these little soft pellets, the brand we have is Kaytee Soft Sorbent. This stuffs makes it so there is NO SMELL. It gets to the point that you see you need to clean the cage, but still don't smell it. It is like a couple weeks and you realize you need to clean it for the pets' sake. Great stuff. Works for our hamster now.
Also, for their boredom, make tunnels for them with tp and paper towel roll cores. Tear part of the ends a little bit in order to fit them inside the other ends to make long and turning tunnels. They love it. Plus they can chew on them and they are disposable when you clean the cage. We had our friends save the paper towel roll cores for us. We always changed the design at each cage cleaning; they loved the new exploration. I wish the hamster would fit in them. We had to buy the real ones and have to keep cleaning them...

cedar is really smelly and it will kill your mice. Pine is really good but if you get pine shavings for their bedding you should let it air out becuase when it is packaged up the smell concentrates and there is a lot of dust. If you put it in a big bin and sift through it with your fingers (or pretend you are making a sand castle) the smell will go away and there will be less dust.
I prefer paper pulp and corn cob pebbles, though.

Are you talking shavings or for caging or chewing?
For shavings, *Aspen is the only safe one!*
Pine and Cedar BOTH have fragrant oils in them that will cause respiratory infections and even liver damage. I met a lady whose rat died at only 1 year because she didn't know how harmful pine shavings were--the rat got a HORRIBLE respiratory infection and died.

very small shavings. Don't use big woodchips, and don't use cedar. Cedar irritates their respiratory tract.
You would be best off with a paper pulp bedding, actually.
