The world's first public television broadcasts were made by the BBC [British Broadcasting Corporation] from their Alexandra Palace studios in c1936/7. Programmes continued until the outbreak of World War Two when the BBC went off air in the middle of a programme.
After the war, in c1946, the BBC came back on air and started from the exact place where they had switched off the pre-war programme. The BBC wanted to ensure that their audience were able to see the programme in it's entirety.
Audiences were small and it was not until the Queen's coronation in c1952 that many had even seen television. By the 1960s television was much more widespread and soaps like Coronation Street came on air with the newly created ITV Channel, the first commercial TV Channel in UK.

TV was invented by John Logie Bird in the 1920's but the first broadcast to an audience as we would recognise it today was in 1936 when the Nazi regime broadcast coverage of some Olympic events.
Very few people where able to receive the broadcast because so few owned TV's.
TV didn't really catch on until after the 2nd World War.
'Scheduled electronic television broadcasting began in England in 1936 using 405-line system (lasted until the 1980s in the UK). Germany made their first TV broadcasts at 1936 olympics using 180-line TV system. Germany also made their TV broadcasts by the fall of 1937 using a 441-line system. Also France tested TV (455 line system). RCA introduced electronic television to the U. S. at the 1939 World's Fair, and began regularly scheduled broadcasting at the same time (525 line system).'

On October 2, 1925 Baird successfully transmitted in his laboratory the first television picture with halftones: the head of a ventriloquist's dummy, in a 30-line vertically scanned image, at five pictures a second.[1] Baird went downstairs and fetched an office boy, 20-year-old William Edward Taynton, to see what a human face would look like, and Taynton became the first person to be televised in full tonal range.[2]

Television was invented in the 1920's or 30's
HOWEVER
in the 1950's it became a common sight in most households across America. THat is when the common people purchased TVs in large quantity. Before 1950 you would be hard pressed to find a home with a television set.
