According to my mom, we will have even more hours of sunlight on the longest day of the year because we "sprung forward"earlier. Is she right?

Nope. Your mom is wrong. It doesn't matter when Daylight Savings Time occurs as we will still be following the same Daylight Savings Time at the summer solstice as we do every year. We set our clocks back one hour, that's it. It doesn't change the duration of sunlight at summer solstice because that's the same thing we do every year.

Sorry, but your mom is wrong on this one.

Daylight savings time is a man made creation to make it seems like we have more daylight by taking an hour of daylight in the morning (when most people are sleeping) and tacking it on in the evening.

The Sun, Moon and Earth, do not care what time we call it, they are going to move the same way they always have so each area of the Earth is going to have the same amount of sumlight they would get even if we switched AMs and PMs.

Tell Mom that is seems like we have more daylight, but we really don't.

Sorry, but can't side with Mom on this one. Daylight Savings Time is the equivalent of making a string longer by cutting off one end and attaching it to the other end.

You're joking, right? Your mom thinks that Congress can make the sun shine longer?

no. the amount of light will be the same- it may seem longer because sunset will be later on the clock. we cannot control the timing of the planets.
