Used is fine, but operating system must be either XP or Vista. Any recommended brands or models ?

I'm looking for something with at least 512m ram, a decent graphics card, and a processor in the 1.5-2ghz range.

I'd like something that I would generally use at home, but be lightweight and portable for occasional travel, LAN parties, and such.

This might be a no-no - but.... I have bought 2 really great laptops on e-bay. My last one was a PIV, 80 gig HD, internal wireless, 512 ram with Windows Pro for $475 delivered.

Whenever I'm buying a large ticket item, I always call the person (you can ask them for their phone number). Make sure you chat with them before you bid. The first person I bought from was a grad student who just got a job as a programmer and was given a new laptop and sold her year old one for hardly nothing (had everything). The 2nd was was from a guy who's girlfriend worked at Microsoft and the computer was well taken care of. In both of these cases, I called and talked "at length" to the people selling them. You can pick up a lot from a phone call. The first one had XP pro with the CD - pretty awsome buy.

Look for any HP laptop in that price-range (not Compaq, even though they are owned by HP now).
