Many countries too don't print names on their shirts for qualifying tournaments. I think for the smaller teams, it's for cost reasons. Customising each shirt with the player's name costs money. If there's no name the shirt can be re-used even if another player wears it.

Therefore you only see big teams like England, France, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain, Portugal etc with names on the backs of their jerseys.

like many other international countries, the Northern Ireland FA just cant afford it believe it or not. Many countries have this problem as their home premier leagues are weak and do not generate enough money and the fact that N.Ireland have been unsuccesful in qualifying for many international tournements is also a reason for a lack of cash

only the really big teams bother to print the names onto their shirts. this has a lot to do with the merchandising of tops.
plus northern ireland have absolutely no egos running rampant around their team so the players arn't really that bothered about it.

Not sure. As a matter of fact, I think that regarding the UK you'll find that England is the only country that DOES have their names on their shirts. On the other hand,if you were Irish, would you want people to know that you played for their football team?

Whoa! Only kidding!

They had trouble finding someone who could spell all the names in a hurry before the shirts were printed.
The numbers were copied from a nursery rhyme about ten green bottles
