One of the few places I have managed to find any "numbers" about the # of people who live above 7000 feet is here when John Entrine is talking about distance running

Living at high altitude definitely helps. Kalenjin country averages 6,000
to 7,000 feet (2,000 meters) above sea level. Many world class runners in
the Western world move to high altitude locations to train. They find
themselves stronger when they return to the abundant oxygen of sea level to
compete.

Still, this factor can be overblown. Worldwide, there are scores of
millions of people living at similar or higher altitudes in the American
West, Mexico, the Andes, and Central Asia

so he lists "scores of millions." Which isn't impossible when you think that most of pakistan, southern china where it meets india, afganastan, the andes' in south america, kenya and central africa, moutains in Europe and russia, and there are plenty of people living on the continental divide in the US and canada.

So I could see 40 to 80 million people who live above 7000 feet. I used to.

Hmm... I would guess a very small percentage live at such a high altitude. I have read that nearly 75% of the entire words population lives within 70 miles of the coast if I got the mileage right. ( Which is why America places so much emphasis on their naval technologies and the extremely expensive aircraft carriers) Commonly, coastal waters are generally not mountain ranges and 7000 feet is higher then the Appalacian Mountains of the eastern United States. So I would venture less the 1% would live that high up.
