Things went very poorly the first try. I killed all my goldfish in about two weeks time, I have a 12 gallon aquarium http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3865&N=2004+113138
and I just bought the 50 watt Visi-Therm heater and a new filter pad.
The place I went to had a ton of bettas. The workers were all Asian. They told me one betta was a good start. They told me their bettas were better, because they keep them in larger 16 oz containers, rather than other stores keep them in 8 oz containers or smaller. We'll see.
I know I want more than one betta in my tank, but they told me to wait a while. English isn't their native language, but they seem to know something. What do you think?

Tons of Betta?!? Wow!
K, Bro, you want to have more than 1 in the tank, are you sure? Have you already study the nature of Betta?
But if you are serious in keeping more than one betta in your tank, think your best bet would be to keep the bro & sis from the same spawn. That's why the workers have ask you to wait a while. Yeah, females may be able to stay together longer but all betta will fight eventually, on & off. Fins nipped of now and then. So, do be prepared.
Nevertheless, Betta are tough fishes and interesting fish to own. Cheers, wish you have a good experience!

It sound like they do know what they are talking about. There are a couple of things to know.
1)Betta don't like other bettas, or fish that look like bettas. In a 12 gallon tank 2 males would fight to the death. A male and female likely mate then the male would kill the female too defend the nest. Females will fight, but can generally work things out. With your tank I wouldN'T recommend female as it a bit small.)
2)Your tank needs to be cycled. Basically the bacteria that eat ammonia, and nitrites need to be built up. This proccess tend to have high levels of toxic nitrite, and ammonia. It takes 2-3 weeks. Betta can shrug off levels of both that would kill most fish. (It's not idea, but livable. ) See link for details.
As far as what you want for the tank. Bettas can live with any peaceful, fast swimming fish that don't look or act like a betta. Non sailfin molly, swordtails, platty, non fancy guppies, small tetras, killi.... Avoid goldfish. Aggressive like angels. Fin nippers like barbs, and large tetras. Avoid gourami too aggressive, and too betta like in behavior. Of course for cycling you could just get a female than get any fish you want other than a betta.

well i have a betta right now. you can only have one in a tank because if you put 2 betta's together one or both will kill each other. my sis has one too and we have seprate tanks. really i would suggest you starting out with one. you have to clan the tanks every week. other wise it gets way to dirty and the betta will die. the you gotta make sure you feed them ONCE a day. if you feed them more than once a day the betta will die. plus betta's do NOT live in clorine water. they live in plain water. so you have to take the clorine out with a chemical. you mwill also need to buy a net so when you are cleaning the tank you can get the betta easier. you will need to keep the contanier that the betta was in so when you are cleanging the cage all you have to do is get the contanier put water in it take the clorine OUT and put the betta in so you can clen the cage.
hard work but good luck!! Hope all this is helping you out!!!

You can only have one male Betta to a tank or they will fight but you might be able to put in some other types of fish as long as you don't get too many or ones that get very large. You shouldn't get any with long flowing fins or the Betta may attack them.
