Lleyton Hewitt won the ATP Race and the Masters Cup in 2002. The ATP Race takes into account tournament results for the current season, as opposed to the ATP Rankings which is a rolling 12-month system.
Therefore, Hewitt performed best during the 2002 season, culminating in winning the Masters Cup which is contested by the top 8 players in the ATP Race, so he could be considered the top player of the 2002 season.

Lleyton Hewitt, he is one of a few players to hold the #1 ranking for a whole year. Roddick didn't reach #1 until near the end of 2003, after he won his first and (so far) only Grand Slam, the 2003 U.S. Open. Federer then took over as #1 shortly after winning the 2004 Australian Open.

Hewitt was number one at the end of the year in 2002, but i dont think he had it the whole year, roddick had it for a while also in 2002. But it was Hewitt at the end of that year.
