Does anyone know any particular artists/bands which feature great saxophone playing? Rock bands with saxophone solos are welcome, but I'm looking for music more centered around the instrument, probably jazz.. Thanks.

I can't think of many recent examples, but Morphine albums have sax on just about every track. Rocket From The Crypt's album "Scream Dracula Scream" used a full horn section. I can recall some hit songs, mostly from the '80's, where I like the saxophone playing- "Waiting On A Friend" The Rolling Stones, "Only The Lonely" The Motels, "I Might like You Better( If We Slept Together )" Romeo Void, "Smooth Operator" Sade, to name a few. Hell, I'll even admit to liking the sax solo on Debbie Gibson's "Only In My Dreams". Shoot me.

If you're looking for more experimental, aggressive stuff, try-
Side Two of The Stooges album "Fun House". Ash Ra Tempel (German psychedelic rock, early '70's), I especially like a track called "Darkness: Flowers Must Die". Last Exit was a free jazz/noise band, incredibly violent saxophone over squalling Sonny Sharrock guitar. Like the Ash Ra Tempel, these may be hard to find now, but who knows with this whole inter-web thingy...:) As far as jazz, you'll have no trouble hearing great saxophone, Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders are probably my favorites. The electric Miles albums have some great sax work also.

few rock bands are 'saxophone-driven' .. i can't really think of any. Traffic was a great band that featured the sax a lot. Stuff like Tower of Power.

As far as jazz, just go with the great saxophone players. John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Eric Dolphy, Mike Brecker, Kenny Garrett

I would start with any of those. But of course, there are others as well.
