I served the Army 2 years before I began my college career and I was shocked by how naive and inexperienced the college students and professors are about life outside of school.

Not all of them are like that. It's very naive and inexperienced of you to assume they are all like that simply because of your time spent in the Army (frankly, I don't see how this is relevant).

Everyone is different. Some are closed off, others have a firm grip. Assuming everyone is closed off is ignorance. Get to know people before making such dumb statements.

By academia employees, I assume you mean professors, and maybe TA's, but if you mean in general, I think most of the secretaries, middle administrators, and maintenance personnel have a very real view of the world. Teachers teach theories which most of them have never had to try to put into practice in a world which has limited acquaintance with said theories. TA's have mostly spent their lives in the classroom learning those theories. They will generally go on to get their degrees and start teaching without having to leave the hallowed halls. The students can be forgiven their naivete because their parents tried to protect them from the exigencies of the world. The professors need to realize that a world exists that does not know their theories, and could care less. Also, they need to recognize that experience is a great teacher. An example, theoretically, bumblebees can't fly, but the bumblebee could care less.

Because they live in the world of theories not reality. I know what you mean.
