Size. Back in the 1960s, pony cars were V8 powered two door compact cars (although a compact car then was just a little larger than a Honda Accord now) like the Mustang or Barracuda. Muscle cars were the next size up: the Chevelle, GTO, Charger, Torrino, and the like.
Not much that fits that formula today: the Mustang is the only thing carrying the pony car label now. The now-discontinued GTO would have qualified as a muscle car. If you stretch the definition of a muscle car to include four doors, the new Dodge Charger and Cadillac CTS-V would be good examples.
