I have been getting my nails done for six years. I have been to at least a dozen different salons. EVERY single salon I have been to is run by Vietnamese people. They are very nice and do a good job but I hate it when they converse with each other in front of customers in their language. They talk to each other in Vietnamese the entire time. Don't they know that is rude? I can't decide if they just don't care or they just don't realize how rude it is.

OK. I apparently didn't express myself very well. I have no issue with people from other countries coming to the U.S. if they are working hard and making a good life for themselves. I admire the courage it takes to start a new life in a foreign land. But, if I moved to France I would expect to have to learn French. It makes people uncomfortable to hear all the chit chat going on in a language you can't understand. And, no. I would not enjoy working on people's feet. That's why I didn't choose that profession.

The exact same thing happens to me and I hear a lot of other people say the same thing..I started getting the lady who works in the hair salon to do mine...I suggest trying other salons. I agree it is rude and you ARE the customer...

I see your additional details..and I agree. It boils down to the fact that you have chosen to spend your hard earned money in their salon regardless of what is going on with them personally (as in, they made the choice to come to a foreign land, which is great, but I can't be responsible for the communication problem)...that's why I say try other salons.

I think it's quite rude that you think that way. Try placing yourself in their shoes. To begin with, if they're working in a nail salon, spending all day grooming other people's hands and smelly feet, chances are they're there because they're trying to better their own lives and the lives of their children/future children. If that's the case, chances are they aren't very good at English either. Now, just imagine, you're in a foreign country and can barely speak a word of it's native tongue. Would you keep quiet and not speak a word of English when you're in their presence? I'd think not.

Our problem is that we're too uptight to look past our front door and see the world for what it really is. We complain too much because 'all the foreigners can't speak English, and that just gets our goat. Nevermind that the majority of foreigners speak English very well (better than many Americans even), and that in the majority of foreign countries, English and French are used almost just as much as their own native language.

You probably didn't take the time to think that maybe while they're not grooming you they're spending their time studying English, taking college courses, heck maybe even working on getting their citizenship cuz they like American so much!

at times, i would love to know what they are talking about. like if i look over and see someones foot and its all dirty and nasty. i wonder like hmm, how happy are they? but i am fine with it because usually i am far too relaxed to care. as long as they are multi-tasking: talking and doing my nails, i don't care. plus, i know we all do it. are you telling me that if you knew another language you wouldn't use it to your advantage? and if it bothers you so much, learn the language. but you may want to learn a couple, not all salons are vietnamese operated.

I don't see how that is rude, I think what matters most is that I am getting my money's worth with their manicure and pedicure services
