Unfortunately she had no burial policy, so Hubby and I had to borrow the money to bury her. I dont want to keep most of this stuff and would like to help out. Anyone have a suggestions as to who to talk to as far as appraisal and selling of most of the pieces. Any suggestions? She had a black diamond necklace set in silver (touches of tourquoise also) with drop matching earrings, a couple of dinner rings, loose gem stones and few pieces of gold jewelry.

Take the pieces to a 'reputable' jewelery appraiser, antique perhaps?

I had the same situation, I went to 3 different appraisers, and boy, did I get different prices ranges... Be very cautious and take your time.

I finally found the 4th appraiser about 80 to 100 miles from my home. and he topped all the the prices.

Glad I took the time and searched out for the best.

good luck

I have a friend who deals in antique jewelery, he always suggests bringing it into three or more places and getting a quote on how much they would pay for the items. When you do decide to sell negotiate the price up. They expect this, and don't be afraid to walk out. Remember you can always go back and start again.

On the dealers side, remember they are purchasing a product that may not sell for years or ever. They part with their cash knowing this risk, but it is still a risk.

Good Luck

Take your time and find out what it is really worth - think eBay is a good idea if you want to get close to what it's worth. A jeweler will just try to make money off of you. Also, beware where you keep it (there are a lot of cat burglers). If some of it is valuable then put in a safety deposit box and you may want to think about insuring the valuable pieces. Don't show it to your friends who are questionable.

Sorry for your loss of your mom.

Talk to a couple of reputable jewelers in your area - they might be able to help you. You could also try selling some of it on ebay.

Be aware that used jewelry sometimes doesn't bring a high price even if it's valuable.
