Fish don't know it's them in the mirror they think it's another fish. A betta will puff up it's fins and flare it's gill covers. Other more friendly fish will attempt say hi in a fishy sort of way. (Different species do it differently.) In general it not a good to leave a mirror near a tank.

Not sure about go crazy but it scares them. Since fish need to feel secure (some like lots of hiding places like caves, some just need some plants to hide in), this mirror fish is like a fish it can't get away from. No matter how many times he looks, it's looking right back at him!

I know someone who put a mirror on the back of his fish tank to make it look deeper..and instead? His Oscar started headbutting constantly to try and scare this other fish away!

No fish don't have the mental capacity to recognize themselves in a mirror, so they think there looking at another fish.

The fish does not understand the concept of reflection,self-awareness or glass. It thinks it sees another fish approaching it. If it's an aggressive or a territorial fish ,it will attack its own reflection. Male bettas will do this,as well as mature oscars, tilapias etc..

its supposed to be the Japanese fighting fish...if you put a mirror in front of them, they are supposed to think that its another fish and keep hitting into the tank until they kill themselves...I've never seen it don't but that's just what I've been told.
