its their nickname that was given years ago. the Montreal Canadiens real name is Le Club de Hockey Canadiens. that's what the C and H stands for Club and Hockey. the H doesn't stand for Habs in french it Habitant.

Habitants is the name used to refer to both the French settlers and the America-born inhabitants of French origin who farmed the land along the two shores of the St. Lawrence waterway in what is the present-day Province of Quebec in Canada.

As reported above, Habs (not Hav's) is short for Habitants, however the reason that's used instead nickname for the Canadiens is going back to the days whilst Montreal had 2 professional hockey team: The Maroons and Canadiens. Maroons followers have been particularly English speaking Montrealers and Canadiens followers have been French speaking. "Habitants" have been rural French Canadians who's social prestige grew to become into such as "share croppers", and the term grew to become into used as a pejorative via English Montrealers and via center and top classification French Montrealers whilst concerning the working classification human beings. The Canadiens had many French Canadian gamers, and their followers have been often French speaking, so the team itself grew to alter into nicely-called "Habitants" or "Habs".
