Try 1865 in Google search and see what comes up. Probably in England the All England Red Nose Competition - yeah! even then, I kid you not. People with natural large noses, red usually, could take part in competitions to find who has the reddest and biggest nose. Are we mad or what? You bet. We had still not gotten around to the idea of events such as the football etc we enjoy today - so it was red nose thing instead. Remember that in c1865 UK was not having a war with anyone much apart from the usual skirmishes out there in the Empire. The next big war was not due until 1914-etc. So, to fill the time, we got up to a lot of 'silly things' fads and fashions etc.

Nothing changes except the date.
