it just the marks and it has little dots and parentheses symbols all over my report

If you are using word, there should be a button that looks like a backwards "P". Click it and it should go away.
Click Show/Hide on the Standard toolbar
To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10 or go to "View" and press "Toolbars" and from the dropdown list check off "Standard".

You are showing your 'formats'. You don't say what word processing program you're using. No matter which one - look for the 'format' button (it's a toggle) so just click it and they should disappear.
If your using MS word 2003 and over - click on the panel next to the arrow of Getting Started. There you should see a list of things... click on "reveal Formatting"...or "hide formatting".... depending.
