what service did he have? if he had t-mobile or cingular/att, you just get a pre-paid startup kit from the same carrier, and you're good to go. otherwise, you need to get it unlocked, then get a starter kit, and you'll be on your way.

I am 99.9% sure that you cant activate as a prepaid phone.All the prepaid phones i ever saw, came a prepaid phones.
