How many miles have driven it since you bought it?
The manufacturers recommend that you change your oil every 3-4000 miles or 3 months for a reason, and that is to keep your engine running the best it can by getting rid of any impurities or gunk into the oil and then having it changed.
The average owner will drive an average of 15000 miles per year which equals out to around 12-1500 miles per month.
If it needs a refill you might want to check the ground for leaks or take it back to the dealer and have it checked out.
Good luck and hope this helps.

A brand new engine has not yet been properly "run-in".
The surfaces of the cylinders, piston rings, valve stems and valve seals will not be totally smooth when new, so don't make perfect seals with each other. This allows a small amount of oil to enter the combustion chamber and be bunt off.
As the engine gets run-in, the parts of the engine that slide against each other all become polished by the sliding, which allows them to form much better seals. However, this also causes small particles of metal to get into the oil. That is why many (but not all) manufacturers recommend an initial oil change at 1,000 to 3,000 miles, then at greater intervals after - there are less likely to be metal particles in the oil after the running-in has been completed.
So a new engine is more likely to require an oil top-up than a two-year old engine.

Hi. I have read most of the other answers and I have to tell you thata lot of them are old hat. You havent said the make of the vehicle but in general most engines are bench run these days before they even see the car this allows the manufacturers to ensure that the engine is up to standard and that no bits of swarf are left in the engine. There are basically three types of oil mineral , semi synthetic and synthetic. Some manufacturers only use a basic mineral oil when the vechicle leaves the factory in which case you will have to carry out an oil change soon after delivery, however most use semi or fully synthetic which mean that service intervals have been stretched to 20,000 miles or more in some cases. Most mechanics will agree that it is best to change the oil every six months regardless making sure to use a good quality engine flush i.e. Forte to ensure that the oilpathways are kept clear. In short best to do it and be on the safe side.

On a brand new engine you will need a "break in" period. Metal shavings from a newly machined engine will fall off in to the oil pan and become trapped in the oil filter. You need to drain and then replace the oil filter. After this intial period, do the factory recomended engine maintanence schedule and change your oil and filter routinely. This is the cheapest engine maintanence that you can perform and this alone will make your engine last and perform for a very long and trouble free lifetime.
good luck......

Your oil & oil filter should be changed every 3000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first. This is throughout the life of the car. It will make the cars lifetime longer. Failure to do so could cause serious damage & heartache

Everything has loosend and bedded in so oil is soaked in, there should be NO impurities in a new engine/oil hence many cars not having 1st service for 12k or a year (mine is 16k from ). Just keep her topped up withcorrect oil and your fine.

That's the break-in period. It's when the engine gets settled in and sheds impurities. It's unwise to keep the oil in for longer than that so as to maintain the engine's peak performance for the life of the car.

Hi
Whilst the new engine is running in, it will expel bits of debris into the oil (metal, varnish etc...) and you will need to get rid of the oil or the bits could end up being recirculated and cause engine damage.
Cheers

In case any metal pieces were left in the motor, Changing the oil would get rid of these pieces that could cause a lot of damage.

They actually let you go 4 months? They usually want the first oil change early, then every 3 months unless you have synthetic oil.
Primary reason, to keep the warranty in effect.
