Would rubbing alcohol harm the fabric? Whats the active ingredient in the hairspray that works on removing ink stains?

it doesn't . once you dry the clothes the stain is set. you need to apply the hairspray before you wash. i find the cheapest hairspray works best like aqua-net. i don't know why it works i just know i've used this method and it works.
P.S. i also use a very good quality laundry detergent...tide is the bomb...well worth the money

Hairspray really doesn't work at all -- it just makes another stain! Take your clothes to the dry cleaners to have ink stains removed effectively.

Go to Wal Mart or Krogers and get a bottle of Goo Gone.Thats your last hope.Unless your shirt is white.Then try Clorox pen. Goo Gone took gum out of my coat after it went in the dryer.My son left gum in his pocket.It is magic in a bottle.Good luck
