My husband and I are looking for a small SUV for he and I. He is active duty military, so we have my 3 kids half the year, and the other half they are at their dads. I need something small enough for the both of us, yet big enough for when the kids come.
This will be a 3rd car, so I DO NOT WANT a minivan, or anything like that.
Small SUV....the kids are teenagers, and one preteen,so I am sure they will drive their own vehicles.
Does anyone own or know anything about the Kia Sportage??
Opinions????

Kia sportages for years 2002 and before were some kind of a religion, and what has been said before is rather about those. But you are surely considering the newer model, which is a twin of the Hyundai Tuckson. The former was a truck with a sturdy frame, and that allowed it to be used and misused and the weirdest things have been made of that model. It had flaws with connectors, hubs, fan, and running it in 2 feet of muddy water did not hekp either.
the newer is rather more like a car and will never go through the abuses of the former one. It need not to be 4WD; As a front wheel drive only, it will be AOK in normal traffic in all seasons, where the 2WD rear drive of the old model would not help except on solid asphalt: the old needed to be 4WD. Check also for opinions about the hyundai Tuckson as it applies to to the sportage as well.

http://www.carsurvey.org/viewcomments_review_65997.html for actual customer comments, both good and bad. Those that love it do, the ones that don't seem to really really hate it.

It is a Korean made vehicle. I've towed a LOT of them into the dealer under warranty for repairs. Water pumps seem to go out a lot. One I towed 3 times for that problem. The first time it was replaced it went out again as the customer was driving it back from the dealer.

Just as "Ford" is "Found on road, dead" KIA is "Killed in action" in my mind.

Kias have very poor reliability but good crash test ratings. I wouldn't recommend one. Look for the Honda CRV or the Toyota Rav4.
