I am 5'6" and I have trained a 13.0hh pony. Height shouldn't be the deciding vote when you're looking to buy a horse. If you want to do 4' jumping you'll want a taller horse who has the ability to carry him/herself and you over the fence. If you want to stick with jumping 2' then you could get a shorter horse. Something I heard YEARS ago is that you want your nose to be at their withers but I don't know how true that is.
You'll find that most horses advertised for jumping and dressage are sport horses that are about 15.3hh and up. Remember it all depends on how the horse works for you and how comfortable you are with that horse. Don't get a 17.0hh bully if you could get a 15.3hh sweetheart (and vice versa of course! we all know the short ones can have attitude too!). Go with a professional in your area and get their advice also.

I would suggest no less then 17 hands especially if you are interested in jumping. I would also suggest a draft cross like Percheron/Thoroughbred. This will give you more power over the jumps and can also be a great dressage prospect. If this is you're first time buying a horse PLEASE make sure you have someone with horse buying experience with you. Horse people can be a little shady sometimes. Good luck!

I'd say about 16 hands and up would be a good size for you-- I suggest a thoroughbred or a quarter horse. I have seen a grown man ride a little quarter horse, they are hardy and strong. Thoroughbreds are big and muscular and are great for jumping and dressage as well-- Have you ridden a lot? I suggest you brush up on your horse knowledge and take a few lessons before you buy a horse!
GOOD LUCK and if you need any help or have any other questions you can contact my equine help hotline by adding Equine Help 101 to your buddy list for prompt advice and answers! I am usually on and ready to answer but sometimes we have difficulties and if i am not signed on just e-mail me.

A hard estimate might be round 15hh however it's inconceivable to mention for certain. Plus to the solutions above me, .5hh is not a size for horses, a hand stops at .three after which is going to the following quantity eg. 15.three might pass to 16hh no longer 15.four.

Why are you concerned about what size horse to get ? Look for a horse that will be able to do what you want to do. the size shouldn't bee an issue . Your tall enough to sit any size horse. Good luck

16 hands and up would be a nice height for you, but since you are light for how tall you are you could easily ride a stocky, 15 hh horse. (you are lucky and only have to worry about performance)
