Lack of self-confidence, low self-esteem and inexperience. Get out more. Observe how others interact and don't be too self-conscious. Other people have their insecurities, too, and they're trying to cover them up by smiling and laughing too much and too loud. That's why you think they're having such a good time and you're not.

I have what the doctors have described as " Social Anxiety Disorder ". Certain social situations, like sitting near the front in an auditorium or hall, being in a group of 7 -10 people dicussing things, waiting in lines anywhere, being in an elevator with 4-5 others, having to talk in person to someone in authority(like a border guard, even though I have nothing to be hauled over for, I still look very guilty), having to speak in front of a group of people. These are the most problematic, at least for me.

I am not a shy person if described by one of my friends, but I am shy in some social situations. I think it has to do with what others might think of us if we give them our true personalities off the bat.

I'm shy and I have this bad habit of trying to figure out what other people are thinking about me. So to keep from loosing my mind I just don't say anything.

Insecurity, worries of not been accepted or/and liked.
But I think that there are other factors as personality tendencies and past bad experiences that affect behaviour.
