Except for throw-ins and the goalie within his own penalty area, touching a soccer ball deliberately with your hand is a foul. That's the major reason for not throwing them.
As for why it is not called "Football", it IS called Football in most parts of the world. It's just in the US, where "Football" is reserved for that sport where you throw(!) the oval ball around.

It's against the rules to touch the ball with your hands.....hehe, and the rest of the world does call it football. We made our own version of football even though it's more like what the rest of the world calls rugby.
