I would like to "hide" a spare key somewhere on outside of my car in case I should ever accidentally lock the keys inside. It contains a "chip". Is the "chip" necessary to unlock the doors, or is it only needed to activate the ignition?

It is a Ford product.

My last car had a chip for the ignition key. This chip is for starting the car only. The reason for this is the security features. The starter will not engage and the fuel pump will not power up without this chip in the ignition. The door locks themselves are not are not part of this system but the remote door lock opener is. If you were to lock with the remote and someone smashed a window to get in the system will know the door was opened from the inside with the lock on and the alarm will go off and the power the the rest of the car will shut down.

Great question! I recommend hiding a copy of a key that is a flat metal one, then hiding an OE key somewhere inside the vehicle. The "chip", is only necessary for starting the car, not to open the doors.

Good question. Do your doors automatically unlock when you get close? If not then its only for the ignition. Your best bet would be to hide the key towards the rear end of the vehicle to keep it as far away from the ignition as possible.

The chip activates the ignition only to start the engine, not needed to unlock doors.
good luck.....
