Maybank is the best Malaysia bank for opening a current account. Maybank charges the lowest commission for oversea transactions.
i used my Maybank account when i was in oversea. i transferred money every 3 months from oversea bank to my Maybank account. i managed to save some money though the transactions.
Maybank is the largest bank in Malaysia with the network of more than 450 branch offices and more than 900 ATM machines in Malaysia. sometime, you can find Maybank ATM machines in petrol stations and shopping malls.
Maybank also won numerous best consumer Internet in Malaysia. hence, i used Maybank Internet banking very often during my stay in oversea.

If you want my advice, I think you should keep your money in the original currency from the bank and then convert it outside in a Bureau de Change. The rates out there are more interesting than those of the banks. And if you're looking for a good bank, I have an account with CIMB, and the service there is great!!! But there are other banks like HSBC, which is an internatinal bank.
I hope that was helpful. Goodluck!

I am also an expat living in Malaysia. Current accounts are a waste of time here as no one accepts personal cheques.
I have an acoount with the Alliance Bank which I find adequate for my needs, I have yet to encounter a problem with them. I advise an "external" account

I am a very faithful customer of HongKong Bank. Yes, service fees a little higher, but at least I get one-stop service, you can transfer funds to overseas account
