It's pretty rare even in the import world for someone to try pushing an engine that far. Usually the people who go for big power start with more potent engines in the 200-300 hp range, and you can bump the power on those engines up pretty far without spending nearly 20 grand. Owners who hop up less powerful motors usually have the mindset, "I like most of the things about the car, just wish it had more power." Just like domestic owners who spend big bucks trying to bring a '60s era muscle car up to modern handling standards.
However, I've been up to the domestic equivalent. I've got a Dodge Dart with a slant six. Made maybe 110 hp by today's measurements. And I'm on a quest to make it into a 300+ hp turbo monster (on a budget way less than 20 grand). Why? Well, one reason is that if you go to car shows and cruise-ins, you'll usually see a parade of carbureted V8s, and I want it to stand out. The other reason is one I can sum up in three words:
Because I can.

Its all about preference and the fact you can pull up next to a V8 and smoke him. Do you consider a skyline or supra to be a rice burner. You could dump 50-100 grand in one of them easy.

WELL, i totally agree with the jafm thing. MUSTANGS are too COMMON and most ppl with them are cocky. i said most so if your not cocky then i am not talking about you. Just because you have a v8 you are not the shyt. i have a sc400 and it has a v8 and i could blow 1/2 of these mustangs off the track some of them with my v6. on saturdays me boyfriend and i go to the old route 66 and watch cars cruise and 80% of them are mustangs. when i see one its like oh its just a mustang....now i dont realy like the fart can civics either but they are all unique in their own way (lol) unlike the mustang. i rarely ever see anything unique about a mustang. ans sorry i am droning on but this subject is on my mind alot. also some people just like imports. and some know imports better than american made cars. my grandpa is 65 years old and he drives a civic hatchback with a loud exhaust because he knows hondas well

The only GOOD reason? Because that way you're not driving JAFM (Just Another ******* Mustang).
Otherwise, unless your 100-200-ish HP car is something with special qualities (Miata, 240sx, CRX, VR4, stuff like that), yeah it is pretty dumb.
