Basically when you save a file to your computer the computer will find the nearest free space and will fill that up until it runs out of space and then move to the next free space and so forth. If you have deleted a lot of files over time the space on your disk becomes increasingly fragmented and therefore when saving files they can spread right across the hard drive. This makes the disk work harder and slows down how quickly it can access your files.

You need to run a defrag regularly. You can do this through All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter

If your hard drive is very badly defragmented then this will take a long time to complete (we're talking hours) however if you run this regularly then it will complete in minutes.

As for lack of disk space well there's not much you can do other than either move non essential files to disk or buy a new hard drive.

Fragmented files are files on your system that are not saved as one continuous bit of data on your hard drive, and instead, are saved in little chunks on different places of your hard drive.

To defragment you will need at least 15% free disk space, so delete more things and make sure you are emptying the recycle bin while you are doing this.

After you have 15% you can defragment. This won't save any extra space, it will just rearange the existing files so that you can access them faster. Go to control pannel and click "Maintinence" and then "Rearange Files to make my computer faster" or something similar. Then simply click "Defragment" and let it work its magic. This will take a while.

Remember : This will NOT free up disk space. Fragmented files are just any doccuments on your computer that couldn't be fit into one continuous bit of free space on the hard drive.

Also, protip, don't talk in all caps, it makes you look like an idiot.

Hi - FIRST you need to double click on my computer.... right mouse button click on C drive and go to properties. There you'll see Disk Cleanup - and accept the defaults.... do that first..... takes about 5 minutes or so.

THEN - click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and you'll see Defrag there (Disk Cleanup also is there). I defrag my computer once a week or so. If you've never done it, it may take a LONG time so do it before bed or something..... should be done in the morning. You're computer will run faster too. Also, if you did it once a week - it won't take that long.

Try first....Start button/All programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup.check those and see what you want to get rid of.Next goto same place and disk defrag let it run till complete.Should also tell you about how much space you still can use.If you got very little invest in another hard drive.Geeks .com got some 40 gig for $30, or look at Walmart.com and see how much they cost. Then come back to Yahoo answers and plenty people will help you to install.

Here is how to fix ur fragmented files.....click on the start button....click on all programs....click on accessories....click on system tools...click on disk defrag....when the box to defrag pops up...click on run or defrag now....then walk away from the computer ....cause it will take a while...what this does is compresses the files that are on your disc giving you more space. Good Luck

first check for viruses/malware.

delete unwanted video files
uninstall unwanted games etc
you can use a program like disktective to see/compare large files in various directories

http://www.freebyte.com/freeware/#filediskutils

if that does not free up space, buy a new hard disk and use it as a slave to your current hard drive
