I'm looking to start teaching special ed through alternative certification. I've got lots of experience with these types of kids. My Bachelor's degree is actually in Forestry. I have a seasonal position in Forestry for the summer, but it's in WV and I'm in FL. I'm wondering, if in order to move on with my new career path, if I should decline this job, and focus this summer in preparing for teaching (taking tests, etc.) to be prepared for a job next fall. The job in WV pays pretty good--I love the area I'd be in and the folks I'd be working with but I feel that it'll set me back. Basically I really need to get into my career and start making some money. Whew! Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

Follow your heart. If teaching is what you like and enjoy, go for it!

Depends on where your passion is... If you truly love forestry (not even sure what that entails), you should stick with it. You chose it as a major for a reason.

On the other hand, teaching is a very noble career, although not the best choice if you want to start making money. Also, have you investigated to find out if it is possible to receive your certification in only one summer? May require more education/testing than can be completed in such a short amount of time.

Bonus: teachers can have government funded or subsidized loans forgiven in certain situations.

I don't know how old you are, but if you're still young (early 20s) don't yet make career decisions that are based too heavily on money. I mean, we all work to get paid, but focus now more on what you want to contribute to society and to the world. If you really want to save the planet via green movements, choose forestry. If you want to save it one person at a time through education, choose teaching. All careers requiring college education have positions that pay sustainable wages. Don't worry so much about a career set back at this point. Choose what you love and your natural drive and passion will pull you up through the ranks of whatever career you choose and advance your career accordingly.

Life is about contribution, the reward being satisfaction. Look at salary as a bonus, and your compensation being able to use your skills and abilities to their fullest.

Of course, this wisdom doesn't apply to those who are not motivated... We all have to eat and we all have to pay the rent. As long as your passion isn't sitting around, you should be fine.

How can there be a question of choosing a career if you don't have a job in the first place! Teaching as one's career is fine but one needs to get teaching credentials before one can step in!

As for the job you have been offered now, you say you like the place of location, the pay is good and you also like the folks you will be working with!
What more one can ask for?
