Every type of file (Word document, web page, picture, song) is opened, viewed or played by a program. The file type is the extension. Your computer looks at the file type and opens, plays the file with the program that is "associated" with that file type. So if you have a song called mysong.mp3 you computer associates mp3 extension to what ever program you play these files with. If you try to open a file type that's new, you need to "associate" the file to a program. Basically you tell your computer when I open a file with this extension (doc, or jpg, or whatever) to use a certain program. The next time you open a file with the same extension it won't ask.

Anyway, assuming you have Windows, to see/change the "associated" programs for all your file types, go to My Documents and select Tools/Folder Options/File Types. You can change the program that is associated with a file by finding the extension in the list, highlighting it, and clicking "Change".
