My subscription to WinAntiVirus has expired. I am reluctant to renew, not happy with this one. It takes too long to run the scan and slows all other applications down, e.g. browser responses, email etc. I need to install an alternative immediately to have protection. Serious tried/tested info please.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Sandy,
WinAntiVirus is a rogue "Virus Removal" application. It's designed to "fix Viruses" that cause PC instability and vulnerability. However, the developers of this program have a LONG history of un-ethical tactics to acquire their customers. Once their spyware is installed on your pc, you're plagued with irritating false 'Windows-Like' popups. These popups are irritating by design.... they hope to frustrate into shelling out $50 to buy WinAntiVirus 2006 to remove it.
These are usually anti-spyware or security software applications that use either various forms of deception and/or unethical means or show a history of negligent false positives to goad the end user to make a purchase.

In some cases these applications maybe downloaded with some form of unwanted software at which point the rogue application is offered to the customer as a way to remove the unwanted software.
Comment: WinAntivirus may collect the user's information.

From the Privacy Policy:
They may disclose collected user information to advertisers and/or business partners.
Known to issue questionalbe false positives on clean installs of Windows XP.

You are so wise to drop WinAntiVirus as it is considered a "rogue" program that uses false positives as a goad to purchase and provides little or no real anti-virus protection. Kiss it good-bye! There are much much better A-V apps even for free.

Personally, I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Good stuff, free for everyone from:

Good luck!

Personally, I use Trend Micro Antivirus for my laptop, and it works great. the scans run efficiently (no slow-down), and the program updates with new protection data almost daily.
