Sailormoonmei was lucky not to have problems. Don't wear anything with a rubber sole. The rubber will grab the floor too much, you won't be able to turn properly, and you risk a sprained ankle. Leather soles are best for many surfaces, and if you're on a dedicated wood dance floor you'll eventually want a sueded leather sole, as with Latin ballroom shoes, though there's no reason to have them for beginner lessons. Men want to wear comfy slacks (not jeans) with a little room in them for easy motion. Ladies can do the same, but generally prefer skirts, also with room to move, and something that will swirl with turns and spins is attractive. Nothing too heavy--it's very active, and perspiration can be a problem.
