The boogeyman is a fictitious monster-like creature manufactured by parents as an inducement to behave and do as their told "or else the boogeyman will get you".
The "boogeyman" legend is found all around the world in different guises.

The Boogeyman is a fantasy told to children in an attempt to control their behavior, by inducing fear into their minds if they do certain things, usually something not allowed by the parents.
Don't know where it started but it can have negative consequences (like causing nightmares) because inducing fear unnecessarily into a childs mind can be destructive. It is far better to act out of a sense of right and wrong rather than reacting to fear.

The bogeyman is a legendary ghost-like monster often believed in by children. It can relate to a real-life person or someones irrational fear. You know, that thing behind your door, in your closet or under your bed when you were a kid. Some parents use the bogeyman as a threat to get their children to behave.
