Decans are simply the 3 divisions of a Zodiacal Sign.
This is done to pinpoint which period of time a planet’s influence may be felt in a Sign.
The first part is the 1st Decan, the middle part is the 2nd Decan and the last part is the 3rd Decan.
As you can see, there is nothing to it...
Each Zodiacal Sign is divided into 30 degrees.
The first 10 degrees correspond to the 1st Decan, the 10 degrees in the middle belong to 2nd and the last 10 degrees are consequently in the 3rd Decan.
For example, if a planet is nearing the 15th Degree of a Zodiacal Sign, that heavenly body is in the Sign’s 2nd Decan.
close to the start or end of a zodiac sign is called the Cusp
when you are born on the cusp you can incorporate the energies fo both signs, but with an exact time, date and place of birth it is possible to see what sign rules you

Perhaps the middle of a sign is something in Vedic astrology. I have not heard it called anything specifically in Western astrology and I've been working with those concepts since 1979 (eek! time flies).
The beginning and ending 'edges' of astrology signs are called a Cusp. The planets occupying the beginning of a sign are seen as more solidly in the sign, where those at the end of a sign are seen as sliding towards the next sign's energies.
