Where did "King Kong" get his name from?

King Kong is the name of the fictional giant ape, from the fictional Skull Island, who has appeared in several works, most of which bear his name, including the groundbreaking 1933 film, the film remakes of 1976 and 2005, and numerous sequels and paraphernalia.
In the original film, the character's name is Kong -- a name given to him by the inhabitants of "Skull Island" in the Indian Ocean, where Kong lived along with other over-sized animals such as snakes, pterosaurs and dinosaurs. 'King' is an appellation added by an American film crew led by Carl Denham who captures Kong and takes him to New York City to be exhibited.

at the time the movie was made (early 1930's I think) most people related Hong Kong to the orient. Although Hong Kong was a territory of England at the time, actually situated adjacent to China, it was much more widely known than Tokyo or any other oriental location.

The gorilla was originally thought to have originated in the orient thus referring to Hong Kong and because of his size of course came the name King.

It was originally going to be called King of Hong Kong and was later changed to King Kong for easy billing and advertising.
