Growing up .... our dogs ate nothing but table scraps ... with some types of dog food to supplement when there were no leftovers. These dogs seemed healthier than they are today .... or at least less maintenance.

When did it become the norm to feed the pets entirely on pet food ???

My dog eats her dog food, but almost always gets a little tidbit of what I am eating... so long as it's not chocolate or doesn't have onion in it, it should be fine.... my dog begs, yeah, but she's my dog, if other people don't like that my dog begs, they can go elsewhere, my dog lives in my home, the other people don't.....

but that's just my 2 cents...

You might need to separate the dogs while eating, your pit bull is showing very strong signs of "resource guarding" and I think you will need to up the Obedience Training. You need to be in the Alpha role and show strong leadership, then the next most dominant dog should be next in the pack order, then the least dominant in the lowest position. So the top dog gets treats first, pats first and so on, in this case it sounds like the Pit Bull would be top dog of the two. The other dog should fall into line, since establishing pack order reduces the overall stress in a group of dogs. Take all toys away and do not leave bones lying around. Give your dogs a nice meaty bone about once or twice a week, but keep them separated from each other while they eat it and take any uneaten bits away. I say this because there has been a precedent of one dog attacking another. If you want to give them some table scraps make it only about 10% of their total food and add it to their evening meal. Rich, salty and spicy foods are unsuitable as are any cooked bones. Things like pumpkin and some greens are ok or any meat you can pick off a bone for them. Please contact a training school or obedience class about your dogs behaviour. Also neuter and spay your dogs, this might help calm things down, do you have two un-neutered males together there?

Table scraps are not a nutritional meal for your pet and should be avoided. Pet food is made to give your pets exactly what is needed for a healthy diet such as the proper percentages of crude fats and proteins, omega 3 fatty acids, etc, etc, etc. But you should also get good dog food, not the crap found in your local grocery store. Even Iams and Eukanuba is not as good as people thing it is. Although it is better then Ol' Roy, it still contains to much filler, and is fattening for your pet. I would recommend Nutram, Nutrisource, Zinpro, Tuffy's Gold. These are all Premium and super Premium foods and are very good for your pets. They don't contain fillers so your pets will not eat as much, and will go to the bathroom less as well. It may cost you more per bag, but in the long run, you will save as it will last a lot longer. When I had my dogs on the cheap stuff from the grocery store, I was going though a 18kg every 2 weeks. Now that they are on a super premium food, they are all in better health, and an 18kg bag of the food they are on now lasts 2 months.

I would never be able to feed my dogs solely table food as I have a mastiff mix and a st. bernard, my grocery bill would go through the roof :) However, they do get scraps at the end of our meals never cooked bones as animals are unable to digest cooked bones. I believe scraps fed along with a high quality dog food is appropriate as it adds variety to their meals. My dogs eat a variety of scraps including fruits and vegetables which is good for them. Many people are under the impression that dogs are carnivores they are not they are omnivorous and therefore need more than just meat in their diet.

It is not clear when it became a norm to feed the pets entirely on pet food but it is definitely becoming clear that that norm will soon be a thing of the past with pet food being contaminated on a massive scale!

Animals should be fed what they would eat in the wild. Dogs and cats are hunters, they eat meat. They hunt and kill their food, they do not go into the grocery store and drag out bags of processed corn and sugar, salt and starch additives.

A dog or cat should be fed a diet of raw meat. That's right, raw meat. It is clean, easy, and much better for them than pet food.

If your dog likes the scraps and seems to not throw up after the table scraps, then if you would like after all your meals you have table scraps, put all the plates that food remains on, by her/his food bowl and she/he will enjoy! GOOD LUCK! =)
