Someone in my family had this same problem. They believed it was not important enough to see a doctor about it, so they didn't contact one until it became unbearable.
Once they did see a physician, they were told they had calcium deposits on their shoulder joint and it required treatment (which was painful, by the way).
This is a serious problem. I would definitely see a doctor just in case. Hopefully it is nothing serious, but you never know.

That nobody knows what it is indicates you haven't been to your doctor. The joint is inflamed and quite possibly developing a touch of osteoarthritis. The cure is time-consuming, but no rushing it: rest the joint, use a heating pad for an hour twice a day, and use anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen (Motrin). Your physician can determine precisely what's wrong, either by himself or by referring you to an orthopedic specialist. The physician can also order physical therapy and stronger medicine than you can buy without a prescription. If the problem seriously limits your ability to use the joint, cortisone injections sometimes help. So go see your doctor, and in the meantime use heat and Ibuprofen according to the package directions.

Well you didn't mention your age but assuming you are 30-40ish it could be the beginning of long term trouble and due to a lot of strain, overuse or other reasons such as if you work in an office and always have a phone jammed in your ear...that cradling the phone with your shoulder over the years takes a toll.
It could be you sleep on that shoulder all the time. I know that is what I do. Plus I type a LOT...so the pain doesn't stem just from your shoulder but incorporates a lot of muscles and just takes its "toll" in the shoulder.
Firstly if you can afford it I suggest physio therapy. Those people work wonders. Or even a massage to get some of the kinks out...those kinks are calcium deposits which build up in muscles when we overuse them. You CAN work them out but you have to massage them out.
Do yourself a favour and invest in good heavy duty massager, they are about $80. Anytime it hits a "sore" spot work the kink out.
You need to stretch, stretch, stretch.
Women especially their muscles between their shoulder running to the collar bone start to shorten (and you get the round humped shoulder look as a result) so you must work to counter act this.
Take that sore arm and put it behind your back and with the other hand, grab your hand, pull and tilt your head away to get a good gentle stretch.
Find proper stretches to do (yoga, tai chi is best) and heat small moist towels (wet them and wring out the water and nuke for 2 minutes in microwave) place them in a bag and use it for moist heat to relax the muscle, you will find relief.
Hope one or more of these suggestions finds you some relief.

Do You work on Military Jet Air Craft? That is a sympton of prolonged overhead work.I believe their is neck Muscles clamping down to protect a Tender Nerve,I would try Hot tub,
and Mild Physcial moving of arm and shoulder.
I use Bigleo Jell, that is Horse Med. when mine starts acting up.

Well i have exactly the same pain and symptoms in my right shoulder, but i have Arthritis so i know what mine is, you should really go see the doc ASAP, i do get some relief from the Pain & Swelling with Ibuprofen gel that can be bought from the chemist.

I'm really sorry to hear that, try deep heat if that doesn't work it obviously isn't a muscle then you should get accupuncture my mum got that exactley the same spot as what you are describing, forget the deep heat you've got a trapped nerve and need accupuncture! best of luck hope you get better.

maybe you have a frozen shoulder you should get checked out by your GP, my mum had it can be fixed under general anapestic try using some deep heat gel or spray.

hot shower on the sore spot, anti inflam tabs and lots of moving it. it will be sore to move but it helps
