1st off, your car is blowing white smoke out the pipe, that is a sign of a blown headgasket and you are burning more water than fuel.

2nd, your oil cap smells of fuel, well you need to take and have it repaired at a really good shop and one that you trust because the rings on your pistons are either broke or turned and letting fuel slip by and puttin it in the oil pan. and lots of it!

3rd, the trac light should not have anything to do with these problems but you might have a sensor or wire problem in connection with the rest.

Without proper diagnostics you won't be able to get a proper repair, even though you have given great info on your problems, these are problems that need hands on diagnostics.

Good luck and hope this helps.

First off have you taken this to a mechanic yet to "look" into the problem? I've had mechanics loosen up oil filters on me and tell me I had bad leaks, only to charge me for it and tighten the filter. I now try to do my own repairs.

Also, get a repair manual for your car. If you dont want to buy one right now, go to your local library. You can even look up the repair manual online and have it sent to the branch closest to you. In the front there are sections which tell you how to troubleshoot different parts of the car.

I would also suggest that you look under your car to see if gas is leaking, You might have a hole in the fuel hose going from the gas filler hole to the tank. Many are made out of rubber and eventually get brittle and crack which increases its chance of failing. If it is not I would check your fuel pressure regulator. If it is out of sorts it will allow your car to burn "rich", which means to much fuel in the engine.

I would also suggest you have someone check the fuel pump in the gas tank. The float may need adjustment. If this isnt working well, it could tell you there is less gas than you really have.

I hope some of this helps.

Could have a stuck injector but never seen one on a grand am..sure you dont have a gas leak out side the car?
I have done a bunch of head gaskets but that dont explain your fuel usage.. send me an email i need more info

Check the pressure regulator on the fuel rail,it may have a ruptured diaphragm.Do not drive it anymore until you fix the problem.Your oil is being dilluted with gasoline and will become too thin to lubricate properly.

you may a have a leak,or break in some of your hoses/belts and your engine isn't using the gas beacus you said you can barely drive it, so the oil cap smells like gas..it sounds like you ran the **** out of that car, i would get an estimate by a mechanic, if more than 2000 bucks i would just sell it...

do a total inspection of your fuel system, paying close attention to the fuel rail and listen at the sound of fuel injectors to see if they are working properly, check your fuel filter

Your problem is that it's a Pontiac. Sell it while you can.
