I think it is because when the average person thinks of ballet, they picture a ballerina in a tutu. It's thought of as a "girls sport", though thats most definatly wrong. Another thing that may lead people to that wrong assumption is the fact that male dancers are so in touch with their body and how it moves and works. Many men have no kenisthetic sense. Grace is another thing that doesnt come too naturally for most men. When dancing, you must be able to show emotion and this is hard for some men to do in front of their own families, let alone in front of an audience of hundreds. I just think its a variety of reasons, though all are nonsense. I imagine it is hard to be a male dancer, but as a female dancer I will tell you that there is nothing like a male dancer. I would love to watch a male solo any day over a female solo. The way you guys spin and leap is amazing, and so beautiful. Keep doing what you love and ignore the ignorant comments made by those who dont appreciate the art of dancing, the way many of us do.

I taught male ballet classes for several years and while I did run across my share of homosexuals, it had nothing to do with the art they chose to pursue. I don't know why people ASSUME all male dancers are gay. It is considered to be an industry standard but there were a few guys in my classes that were not gay. I've never understood why people assume that all male dancers (ballet or otherwise) are gay.

Many people (wrongly) assume that all male dancers are gay. This is because ballet has alwasy been consitered a feminine persuit. What many do not see though is that ballet's reley upon men just as much as women, and to be a dancer is not 'girly' at all. It is true that the arts world has more that the average number of homosexuals, but to asume that all are is simply stupid.
If you are a male dancer keep it up! I praise you highly :)

I think without the guys, there wouldn't be any lift and it would get a little boring. All those ballet's being told with only girls? It wouldn't work well. I don't think they're all gay. I bet a lot of them aren't. Tons of girls like football. So why can't guys like ballet? Stereotypes are so pointless. I'm glad you agree! Besides, male ballet dancers can do a lot of things other men can't. They have more control over their bodies and a lot of the time, more strength.

I think it's because Ballet is a very girlie sport or art. Personally I find male ballet dancers very Masculine but I know a boy who did ballet and he was VERY ridiculed by others. Someone once said boys doing ballet is "like them playing with barbies." I find that statement ridiculous.

Um...because of the tights?? I think it's fine that boys are in ballet. We couldn't do it without them sometimes. Mikhail Baryshnikov said " I am not the first straight dancer, or the last. "
