I want to start a one-hour photo lab, but also have other items in the store, like perfumes, digital cameras, special batteries, any items that go with photo taking, handbags, photo albums, picture frames. I want to have a photo lab and a small gift store. How do I get started and where do I find retailers/ manufactures to order from. Where do I get the photo lab equipment? Where do I get camera stuff to sell? I would like to sell name brand bags, something like Vera Bradley. I would like to sell Name brand Perfumes/ Colognes like Tommy, Hugo etc. How do I get started and is it wise to develop pics and have a small gift shop?

I also live in a very rural area, there are no other store like this. To get film developed you have drive at least 30 minutes. We only have a "Family Dollar Store" and "Dollar General Store" and one privately owed grocery store in my town. I think this business would benefit alot of people in my town.

Do not make the mistake of "putting the cart before the horse." Think about your intended consumers for a moment. Most people who utilize one-hour photo labs want photos. It might be true that they could want digital cameras, batteries and nice frames, but the whole handbag idea seems more appropriate for another store. Remember, men will be visiting your store, too. We don't go to photo booths to buy gifts for our wives, girlfriends or mothers. We do that at the mall, in stores like Macy's or Dillards. Stick to photo supplies! Then if you're a big success, open another store to sell perfume and handbags. As for camera supplies, try Wolf Cameras. They're a big wholesale supplier.

You'll need to spend a lot of money to set up, before you ever serve your first customer, so it's worth while looking around first to check that there will actually be customers who want what you want to sell, and enough of them to make it a viable business.

And if there are customers there, there might already be some kind of photo shop facility in the town, or people there might be used to going to a nearby bigger town for their photo lab work. If so, you may be facing fierce competition, which will add a lot to your costs.

Good luck!
