The Earth is made up of tectonic plates as mentioned in previous answers, they sit on a world wide sea of molten lava.
This enables them to move everyday but we don't usually feel them unless they get stuck and then move suddenly along a fracture or fault.
It's these sudden movements that causes the Earth to "Quake".
Some areas are more prone to earthquakes than others, for example the area known as the "ring of fire" due to the amount of volcanic activity, is also the most prone to earthquakes.
The links below should be able to explain it more clearly, the second link is a world map that shows the most recent earthquakes for this week, but I might have a clearer map on disc somehwere that has the plate boundaries on it.

Any type of plate movement causes EQs. there are different plate boundaries like a transform fault, where plates slide past each other, convergent boundaries, where plates collide, and divergent plate boundaries, where plates move away from each other.
